Superbikes – Highly Modified Production Models for Racing

Based in San Francisco, Peter O’Sullivan holds leadership responsibilities with the global accounts and categories team at Facebook. He has worked at the San Francisco office since October 2019. With a background in motorcycle racing, Peter O’Sullivan has also achieved victories in class championships spanning 750 Superbike, Formula 40, and Formula 1.

Superbike racing is distinct from MotoGP as the former uses highly modified production bikes rather than purpose-built motorcycles. To become eligible for competition, Superbikes must be derived from a specific standard production bike that has been produced in quantity by the manufacturer.

Each series has its own rules. Superbikes typically need to maintain the same overall appearance and profile as the production bike, and the frame should not be modified. Elements that are open for modification include the brakes and suspension, as well as the size and diameter of the wheels.

These restrictions result in significant performance differences between Superbike and MotoGP racing, as the latter tends to showcase prototype machines that are different from production models. This mimics the distinction between Formula One and sports cars in auto racing, although there the performance gap is even greater.
